IBPS PO Mains Descriptive Test: Writing Tips
The Descriptive Test carries 25 marks and includes one Essay
and one Letter/Precis, to be completed in 30 minutes. Here are some tips that
can help
- Time
split: Give roughly 18 – 20 minutes to the essay and 10- 12 minutes to
the letter, since the essay carries more weight.
- Keep
a structure ready: Prepare a general opening and closing format in
advance for both formal and informal letters to save time.
- Essay
approach: Stick to a simple introduction–body–conclusion structure.
Use 2–3 clear points with examples rather than trying to cover everything.
- Word
limit: Stay close to the suggested word count. An essay is usually
expected around 200–250 words and a letter around 150 words; going too
short or too long can affect scoring.
- Typing
practice: Since this is a typed test, practice typing in English
beforehand if you’re not used to typing quickly and accurately on a
keyboard.
Exam Day Dress Code/Prohibited Items
- There
is no fixed uniform for the IBPS PO exam, but candidates are advised to
dress simply to avoid delays.
- Wear
light, comfortable clothing.
- Avoid
heavy jewellery, large buttons, brooches, or clothes with big pockets.
- Keep
hair open if it has been tied with metallic clips or pins, since these may
need to be removed at the checking point.
Prohibited Items in PO Mains Exam Centre
The following items are not allowed inside the examination
centre, even in switched-off condition:
- Mobile
phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, and any other electronic gadgets
- Calculators,
log tables, and slide rules
- Notebooks
and any written or printed material
- Wallets,
handbags, and pouches
- Any kind of geometry or pencil box, unless specifically permitted for descriptive test rough work
